Elderly care help: Osteoporosis

As one grows older immune systems decline and the elderly are much more susceptible to conditions generally associated with the older generation.

One condition that can develop in later years is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is when the insides of your bones (a mesh of tony struts of bones) become weak and fragile meaning they can break after only a minor bump or fall. Fractures can occur anywhere but for the elderly the most common areas are the wrist, hip and spine.

If you are providing long term care for an elderly relative that suffers from osteoporosis then there are a number of ways you can assist them in recovery and continuing to life a full life:

Consider drug treatment – if your risk of fracture is high there are a number of prescription drugs available to help reduce that risk.

Tackle pain – Bones, on average, take 6-8 weeks to heal but your loved one may experience pain for longer. Recovering from a broken hip can be a long process that may also involve  referral to a physiotherapist and social services.

Over the counter medication or certain prescribed drugs can help if taken correctly. Drug free ways include physiotherapy, hydrotherapy (exercise in water) or using a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machine. Complementary therapies, like acupuncture, homeopathy, the Alexander Technique and aromatherapy, may also be of some benefit.

Healthy lifestyle – Changing the way they live can play a big part in building strong and healthy bones. If you are providing elderly care help bear this in mind when planning activities and days out.
