Elderly community : When does middle age start?

February, 2013

In years gone by previous studies have pinpointed middle age as being as young as 36! Before you recoil in disbelief fear not, with the average life spam increasing and changes to people’s mindset this, thankfully, is no longer the case!

Love to Learn, the online learning website recently conducted a survey of 1000 UK over 50’s to see how opinion has changed. Results from the survey were mixed and highlighted a number of changes from previous studies. The survey suggests that on average middle age begins at 55 – much later than previously thought. Not only that but us Britons don’t see ourselves as ‘elderly’ until we hit our 70’s!

Although 7 out of 10 of the 50-somethings did see themselves as middle aged, the average age at which that period of life was perceived to start was 54 years and 347 days old. However a small amount of those quizzed, nearly 1 in 5, did not believe middle age did not begin until after the age of 60. For some (19%) it has nothing to do with your physical age and merely your state of mind.

The survey also asked participants when they therefore thought middle age end – the average came in at 69 years 277 days – this suggest middle age now spans 14 years, going well beyond the government’s planned state pension age of 66.

John Craven, who is supporting the website’s launch, said the concept of ageing had changed: “Only a generation ago, many people were pretty old at 60. “These days most of us in our middle and later years are much younger in our attitudes and it’s all about having an active state of mind.”
