Silver Sunday

October, 2014 Print

Held on the first Sunday of October, which this year falls on the 5th October, Silver Sunday is a national celebration of older people and their contribution to communities.  Through a variety of free activities Silver Sunday offers people over 65 a chance to keep active in body and spirit, try new things, meet their neighbours and, ultimately, overcome loneliness.

Celebrity Joanna Lumley is quoted this week in the Telegraph as supporting Silver Sunday,

“This is a special day for older people to get involved in community events and activities to bring back some of the traditional community spirit,” she said.

“We want it to become a kind of national fixture like Mothering Sunday, so that every year when the first Sunday in October comes round, we remember it.”
